Creating Individual Journal Rankings Based on a Community Approach

2010

Selecting appropriate publication outlets is crucial to any researcher. Journal rankings can be used to guide the selection, but their usefulness may be limited for particular audiences. In this paper, it is argued that especially young researchers and researchers in interdisciplinary fields can benefit from targeting research efforts to a specific community. This can be facilitated by an individually built journal ranking that exploits a community building perspective and by a more transparent process of use. The approach introduced here is based on an analysis of both traditional journal rankings and behavior of academic communities. As a result, we present a procedure for building and us…

Multicriteria Decision Aiding for Planning Renewable Power Production at Moroccan Airports

2022

This study is about multicriteria decision aiding (MCDA) for the green airports program of the Moroccan Airport Authority ONDA. The goal of the program is to develop significant amounts of renewable power at airports. In particular, ONDA wants to select airports at which large solar and wind power parks should be built. Multiple criteria, including economy, technical feasibility, and environmental concerns, must be considered simultaneously. In this study, we apply Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA) for ranking the candidates to be developed into green airports. The analysis is conducted in phases with different sets of criteria. This study is the first application of MC…

World`s Most Valuable Brand Resonation With Categories of Different Customer Needs

2017

One of the key performance indicators of brand success is its value. Brand value is an outcome of brand`s performance in market, and is largely depended from brand`s ability to satisfy certain customer needs. For the greatest success in the world`s market brand should resonate its ability to satisfy some of customer`s most universal needs. In this paper authors strives to find out which of the needs world`s most successful brands are resonating with. Therefore paper goal is to is to determine what customer needs world`s most valuable brands are primarily satisfying. First part of paper authors briefly evaluate Maslow theory of needs. In second part of paper authors identify main challenges …

Element weighted Kemeny distance for ranking data

2021

Preference data are a particular type of ranking data that arise when several individuals express their preferences over a finite set of items. Within this framework, the main issue concerns the aggregation of the preferences to identify a compromise or a “consensus”, defined as the closest ranking (i.e. with the minimum distance or maximum correlation) to the whole set of preferences. Many approaches have been proposed, but they are not sensitive to the importance of items: i.e. changing the rank of a highly-relevant element should result in a higher penalty than changing the rank of a negligible one. The goal of this paper is to investigate the consensus between rankings taking into accou…

Visual Re-Ranking for Multi-Aspect Information Retrieval

2017

We present visual re-ranking, an interactive visualization technique for multi-aspect information retrieval. In multi-aspect search, the information need of the user consists of more than one aspect or query simultaneously. While visualization and interactive search user interface techniques for improving user interpretation of search results have been proposed, the current research lacks understanding on how useful these are for the user: whether they lead to quantifiable benefits in perceiving the result space and allow faster, and more precise retrieval. Our technique visualizes relevance and document density on a two-dimensional map with respect to the query phrases. Pointing to a locat…

Testing a spectral-based feature set for audio genre classification

2011

Automatic musical genre classification is an important information retrieval task since it can be applied for practical purposes such as the organization of data collections in the digital music industry. However, this task remains an open question because the current state of the art shows far from satisfactory outcomes in terms of classification performance. Moreover, the most common algorithms that are used for this task are not designed for modelling music perception. This study suggests a framework for testing different musical features for use in music genre classification and evaluates the performance of this task based on two musical descriptors. The focus of this study is on automa…

THE UNINTENDED PERVERTED EFFECTS OF THE RANKING OF UNIVERSITIES WITHIN THE POLITICAL ENVIRONMENTS WITHIN COUNTRIES IN TRANSITION. CASE STUDY: ROMANIA

2011

Ranking has arrived to be compulsory for all countries as a tool to compete in the global world. The ranking’s rules are settled by some couples of global rankers. When their practices are implemented into national environments, mainly in countries under transition, some perverted effects might appear. The paper focuses on effects on politic environments and their follow up on academic communities, students and parents, and civil society as an effect of mass media involvement. The theoretical issues are illustrated by the outcomes in Romania particularly as a consequence of the application of the Educational Law since January 2011.

European Political Science and Global Knowledge

2018

In this chapter, the author maintains that rankings of universities and their social carriers participate in the relatively successful practical realization of the academic standards they seek to codify and of the shaping of reality according to the criteria they promote. In this sense, global university rankings are becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that becomes true through positive feedback of varying intensity. They have succeeded in establishing through quantitative objectification certain types of equivalences between scientific excellence and numerical indicators. The reasons for their success are their performative efficiency (‘scientific’, quantitative) and the prac…

Superposing significant interaction rules (SSIR) method: a simple procedure for rapid ranking of congeneric compounds

2020

The Superposing Significant Interaction Rules (SSIR) method is revised and implemented. The method is a simple combinatorial procedure, which deals with in situ generated rules among a dichotomized congeneric molecular family, selecting the most probabilistically relevant ones. The mere counting of the number of relevant rules attached to new compounds generates a molecular ranking useful for database filtering, refinement and prediction. The algorithm only needs for a symbolic molecular representation and this allows for mining the database in a confidential manner. Third parties will not know the real compounds that are on the way to be worked out. The procedure is tested for a complete s…
